Jim Haines was athletically successful as a player, coach and official. As a graduate of Lancaster Catholic HS, he lettered four years in football and basketball during the early 1960s.

While serving in the US Army (including Viet Nam) Haines played football with the 3rd Armor Division which won the European Championship. He also played 10 years of semi-pro football.

Haines coached youth football in Willow Street with his teams winning two championships. And he received prestigous awards for umpiring baseball and officiating football.
